Deleting Duplicates

A free solution is Moleskinsoft’s Clone Remover which is an award-winning small shareware utility to find duplicate files and to remove the duplicate files from Windows computers. It will help you to search for and delete duplicate data in a safe way on your PC or laptop.

 

This software provides different ways to search for files, which are:

  1. Search by contents where files may have different names, but similar content.
  2. Search by mp3 title this method is useful when you want to rid the disk space of  duplicate mp3 files.
  3. Search by properties which finds duplicate files by name and/or file size.
  4. Search for files which have a zero size.

You can also use the provided filters to search for duplicates of a given type only. Limit the scope of the search by size, date of creation , attributes etc.

When the program has finished searching for the duplicate files, it will then show a list of the duplicate files it has found which you can immediately proceed to delete. To make sure the program came up with the correct results, you can use the built in file viewer.

After doing this you can rebuild your iTunes catalog by pointing iTunes to the new cleaned up folder.

Unneeded directories can also be removed from iTunes or deleted.

The following steps can be used manually to consolidate an iTunes music collection getting rid of duplicates:

ñ Create a new directory on a hard disk that has enough space.

ñ Move all your music files to the new directory.

ñ Tell iTunes to consolidate your library File >> Library >> Consolidate Library. This will move the tracks used by iTunes to the new directory.

ñ Delete the original iTunes music directory where the duplicates are

ñ Create a new directory in the original location and move the music back to the original location

This method works fine for Mac and it should work on a Windows computer.

Double check before deleting the files.
